Abstract
Sleep has a number of functions. It important for restoration and recovery of the body, fighting infection, alertness, memory and performance, brain development, and the regulation of mood, emotions, and behavior. Evidence suggests that children in our society are unlikely to obtain sufficient sleep on a regular basis. Short sleep and sleep disorders can have major effects on the mental and physical health and well‐being of young people. There are a number of social, environmental, and health‐related factors that might affect young people's sleep, and these need to be addressed along with ways in which sleep may be improved.
