Abstract
Novel Shocks: Urban Renewal and the Origins of Neoliberalism argues that the political and ideational origins of neoliberalism were forged in the battles over suburban and urban space in the 1950s and early 1960s, and that the post-war novel is a key space where this struggle occurred. In doing so, Novel Shocks offers the first literary pre-history of neoliberalism and a new theorization of the formal and political stakes of the Cold War novel.
