Abstract

We report electrochemical properties of Li[Ni1/3Co1/3Mn1/3]O2 (NCM) active material coated onto anodized aluminium foil are systematically studied, for the first time, to Li-ion rechargeable battery application. The purpose of the anodized layer which is highly porous to compare with that pristine conventional Al substrate. Anodization was effected over aluminium current collector using orthophosphoric acid to increase porosity and create a hard electrically insulating with NCM material. The coated of the NCM active materials on both before and after anodization with aluminium substrates as a current collector were characterized by state of art techniques. The anodized NCM cathode materials exhibited an initial discharge capacity of 171 mAh g−1 as against the conventional NCM of 161 mAh g−1, which corresponds to a 6.2% improvement in capacity. The columbic efficiency is approximately 99.5% at 0.1 C rate in cut-off potential range 4.2–2.5 V.
