Abstract

This is a critical essay commissioned by the european centre for cultural economy (Dortmund) for their online urban cultural politics project, LabKulturTV (no longer active). It explicates the policy concept of "creative city" in the context of its appropriation in urban planning and economic development around the world (but specifically in Europe). It questions the concept and the set of strategic approaches that have become normative in urban regeneration. It concludes with recommendations for an informal strategy of creative urban development.
