Abstract

The growing availability of real-time data (e.g. wide area monitoring) in power systems makes it possible for the less time sensitive aspects of protection to both deliver a secure, selective response and consider economic requirements. An operational tripping scheme (OTS) trips generation to prevent the cascading thermal overload of transmission lines after multiple line outages. This paper presents an enhanced OTS that calculates dynamic thermal line ratings (DTLRs) online to replace the conservative static line ratings presently in use and minimize unnecessary generation tripping. Furthermore, the time available before a thermal overload can be estimated and used as the basis for the economic optimization of the OTS actions. This allows generation tripping to be replaced with less invasive and cheaper generation re-dispatch. The DTLR-OTS is studied using simulations of the full GB power system. The new scheme is an example of a Wide Area Monitoring, Protection and Control (WAMPAC) application. © 2016 Power Systems Computation Conference.
