Abstract
During the 3rd and 2nd centuries BC the Roman power was steadily increasing. One after the other the cities of Magna Graecia were falling in the hands of the Romans (Syracuse in 212 BC, Taras in 209 BC), the Macedonian resistance was crashed (197, 168 and 146 BC), the Aitolian League humiliated (189 BC) and Corinth devastated with valuable booty for the winners (146 BC).1 The Romans conquered Greece but in turn they were conquered themselves by the Greek art and culture to such a degree that they can be regarded as the most prominent heirs to the Greek civilization. Perhaps the most tangible signs of these parallel processes is the fact that numerous divine images made by celebrated Greek sculptors were transported to Rome and were dedicated as cult statues in Roman temples.2 Numerous artists some known by their names – Timarchides, son of Polykles, and his sons – were called in to embellish the Roman capital (Plin. nat. 36.35).3 Certainly along with the phenomenon of cult transplantation and religious amalgamation a growing approximation to the Greek imagery and the Greek Classical style was also taking place. The portrait statues of the Roman imperial women on the other hand constitute a rather challenging case study of resistance since they offered ample space for the flourishing of rather traditional and old persisting ideas concerning the public appearance of the female members of the imperial family. Aim of the present paper is to explore the stylistic language of these images in the brighter context of cultural interplay in the province of Achaia.
