Abstract
In this paper, I explore the apparently conflicting medical authorities (Hippocrates, Galen, Democritus) mentioned in late antique medical, and non-medical, texts. I challenge the common assumptions about the progressive neutralisation of medicine in a Christian world, and argue that continuity is more important than rupture in ancient conceptions of medicine, from Galen to late antique scholars at Alexandria...
