Discontinuities in the phase of several double scattering path contributions to the calculated extended x-ray-absorption fine structure (EXAFS) at the zinc K edge in the zinc tetraimidazole cluster have been observed. The double scattering contribution has an amplitude which is close to zero and undergoes a jump discontinuity of pi in the phase. The position in k space of this feature is sensitive to the geometry of the path and the atoms involved. The origin of this discontinuity is traced to a generalized Ramsauer-Townsend resonance at a nitrogen atom. With a shift of geometry the energy of the discontinuity is found to move in a systematic manner. a consequence of the curvature of the photoelectron wave front, the typical EXAFS scattering being of Fresnel type. The results are discussed in the context of Nye-Berry phase dislocations and the implications for EXAFS analysis are examined.
