Abstract

This chapter analyzes two films that reflect the social changes that have taken place in Brazilian society after the social governments of Presidents Lula and Dilma: Casa grande / Casa Grande, or The Ballad of Poor Jean, (Fellipe Barbosa, 2014) and Que horas ela volta? / The Second Mother, (Anna Muylaert, 2015). Both films portray the social dynamics in upper-middle-class households and comment on the colonial past of slave owning families. The chapter contends that the films make use of specific spatial strategies to convey social and class conflict, thereby revealing new subjectivities that trespass invisible spatial barriers and contest the rigid identities of class in Brazilian society.
