Abstract
At the end of the 19th Century, British colonial authorities in India became aware of the importance of arms trafficking in the Persian Gulf. As tribal revolts and insurgencies broke out in Persia and on the North-West frontier, the Gulf became a hub for arms trafficking. For British and Anglo-Indian authorities, arms smuggling was regarded as a “matter of imperial safety”. This article charts the measures put in place by British colonial authorities to combat arms trafficking and the expansion of smuggling networks, which connected East Africa to Muscat and enabled the exportation of arms ammunitions to India through Persia and Afghanistan. This article argues that British and Anglo-Indian policies against arms smuggling served as a tool to enforce British and Indian authority in the Gulf in the age of new imperialism.
