The isolation of the title compound, C14H12N2O2, as a byproduct from the reaction of ethyl 2-cyano-3,3-bis(methylthio)acrylate with acetophenone is reported. There are two independent molecules, and the dihedral angles between the pyran ring and the attached phenyl group are 10.32 (8) and 26.34 (5)degrees.
