Abstract

The commemoration of Ravensbrück victims who were persecuted for their lesbian orientation remains controversial to this day. Activists have been fighting for the recognition of these victims, some of them since over thirty years. Anna Hájková and Birgot Bosold talked with three of them: Ulrike Janz, who has researched the ambivalent lesbian history since the 1980s (focusing on lesbian perpetrators and homophobia of the prisoner society), and Irmes Schwager and Lisa Steininger, members of the Initiative autonomous feminist women and lesbians from Germany and Austria. Together they discussed the erased lesbian history, the legacy of the second wave of feminism, the gay resistance against lesbian history, and the future of feminist historiography of Nazi Germany in the age of populism.
