Abstract
This introduction is a self-standing overview of the role of law in the culture of Enlightenment Britain, taking law in its widest possible sense. There are four main sections. The first considers culture, history, law and enlightenment as interrelated phenomena, each shaping the other(s) in ways still impacting us today. The second focuses on the relationship between politics and political thought in the Enlightenment, with a special focus on lawyers and on those famous in other spheres who interacted with them. All this forms the background to an in-depth discussion of Enlightenment law in the third part. These various elements are drawn together in the fourth part, in which culture and law are ever-more-closely tied together. The introduction therefore aims to relate law and legal studies to the wider context of approaches to cultural histories of the Enlightenment.
