Abstract
This chapters interprets the proem to the third Georgic (G. 3.1-48) as a transitional piece on the crucial edge between the bygone times of the Republic and the upcoming rise of the empire. It focusses on the fictional representation of barbarians, here woven into the same curtain that they are forced to raise in glorification of Rome’s success (G. 3.25), as the missing central link of a process which is both political and poetic, namely the transformation of the Roman state from the age of Republican triumph, envisaged in the procession to the theatre-temple, and the future triumphal expansionism of Augustus’ empire, explicated in the monumental ecphrasis.
