An integrated way of viewing workpiece function performance is presented. This is called a function map. Some of its attributes are explained. Using this function map a classification scheme for functional performance is developed. The way in which surfaces relate to function is investigated with respect to these maps. New boundary conditions are revealed thereby allowing conventional parameters to be used with confidence so avoiding a new parameter rash. The whole approach is pictorial rather than analytical for clarity (C) 2001 Elsevier Science Ltd. All rights reserved.
