Abstract

The use of structure functions in surface metrology started in 1970. It was originally used as an adjunct to correlation theory but some favourable properties have led to its being used to estimate the parameters of fractal surfaces. This note investigates some of the properties of structure functions and proposes some extensions. From these some very simple techniques for fractal analysis are developed.
