Abstract

The present thesis is concerned with the founding process of Deutschlandradio in the context of German reunification. It was established as a merger of the three existing radio stations Deutschlandfunk and RIAS (Western Germany) as well as Deutschlandsender Kultur (East Germany) in 1994. Together with its forerunners, Deutschlandradio was an intermediate institution that bridged the two societies before, during and after the unification. Due to the many interest groups involved, it took four years to negotiate the structure of the new radio station. Those years were marked by the same severe conflicts and power asymmetries that were prevalent in the unification process. Therefore, I argue that the founding procedure of Deutschlandradio was a “unification on a small scale”.

While there are many studies that address large-scale societal processes after 1989, there are only few studies that focus on how people made unification work in daily life, and how they made sense of the changes. Hence, the present thesis studies the merging process on three levels: First, using Bourdieu’s concept of the forms of capital, it analyses the institution-building process on a structural level. Secondly, taking up an ethnographic approach, the thesis analyses the experiences people made during that time. Thirdly, it qualitatively examines the broadcasts of RIAS, DS Kultur und DLF to show how the “unification on a large scale” was framed in East and West German media outlets.

The Deutschlandradio and its forerunners are considered to be platforms that mediated the societal, political and medial transformation. By addressing the rapid changes that took place in East Germany, journalist negotiated German-German realities and identities. This thesis shows how unified Germany was constructed and articulated in the founding process of an all-German media institution, and how individuals reinforced, subverted or contested these constructions, thus engaging with what it meant to be German.
