Abstract

The product isolated as colourless crystals from the reaction system TeCl4-SbCl5-18-crown-6-MeCN has been identified (X-ray diffraction studies) as the ionic salt [(18-crown-6)Te(Cl)(mu-O)(2)Te(Cl)(18-crown-6)][SbCl6](2). The mu-oxo-bridged cations have a centre of inversion and feature a distorted eight-coordinate metal environment involving two bridging oxygen atoms (Te-O 1.960(4) Angstrom), one terminal chlorine atom (Te-CI 2.361(2) A) and five of the six oxygen atoms of the crown ligand (Te-O 2.549(4)-2.886(5) Angstrom). The question of stereochemical involvement of the lone pair of electrons associated with each Te(IV) centre is considered. (C) 2000 Elsevier Science Ltd. All rights reserved.
