Abstract

The diverse and dynamic processes of uprooting, moving and re-rooting reveal some of the social injustices of modern mobility. As Per Gustafson argues, ‘freedom of movement depends on resources, abilities and capacities that are unequally distributed’ (Gustafson, 2006, p. 28). The motivations, aspirations, and modes of travel that bring people into the city are undoubtedly different depending on one’s cultural background and socio-economic status (Ilcan, 2013) and this 11-year-old pupil, quoted above, is grappling with the complexities of migration by considering the contrasting experiences of those who arrive in the UK’s city of Coventry either to seek employment or to gain a university education.
