Abstract

This chapter focuses on the experiences of Quaker children in the movement’s first and second generations (c.1650 to c.1720). Utilising the printed spiritual autobiographies of ministers, records of suffering, and persecution, as well as family correspondence, it shows how young people shaped and were shaped by early Quakerism. Because the movement was both marginal and itinerant, children’s experiences could vary markedly from those of their contemporaries, especially since they were expected to be educated within the Quaker faith and adhere to a strict set of customs and values in their daily lives. It shows how the experiences, identities, and contributions of the youngest members of the Society deserve a more prominent place in the history of the movement than has previously been acknowledged.
