Abstract
Very few figures in history have generated as much fascination as Alexander the Great. In the Renaissance, his deeds were held up to princes and rulers as models for emulation, and they were illustrated in countless painted cycles in princely palaces and wealthy homes in Italy and beyond. Among these is the Sala di Alessandro Magno – an intimate space in the Castle of Bracciano. It was decorated a fresco by Taddeo and Federico Zuccari around 1559–1560 with four episodes from the life of Alexander. Daniotti’s research deciphers the iconography of the main scenes and improves our understanding of the patronage of Paolo Giordano Orsini and Cardinal Camerlengo Guido Ascanio Sforza di Santa Fiora, nephew of Pope Paul III Farnese and uncle and custodian of Paolo Giordano. Inspired by ancient classical texts, the cardinal most likely contributed to the iconographic programme of the frescoes.
The wedding of Paolo Giordano Orsini and Isabella de’ Medici in 1558 was a crucial moment in the history of the Castle of Bracciano.
