Abstract

Reinvestigation of the reaction of cyclam with Cu(II) over an extended UV wavelength range, in a base concentration range 10(-3)-10(-1) mol dm(-3), showed a more complex behavior than that previously reported. It was noticed that the rapid bimolecular binding was followed by two slower first-order processes. The reaction mechanism proposed to explain the experimental facts assumes that the complex formed during the rapid stage undergoes two slow isomerisation processes, in order to acquire its thermodynamically stable conformation found in the solid state.
