Abstract

Sunspots are among celestial phenomena recorded by early observers; descriptions feature in European and Chinese recordings. We report here on a drawing of sunspots that is their first known illustration, and comes from Worcester, England. It predates the first known Chinese drawings (from the 15th century) and there appear to be no later drawings until the invention of the telescope.
