The synthesis of the title compound, C22H19NO4S, is described. The methyl group of the methylthio substituent points towards the CN group, as has been noted before when bulky substituents occupy the 5-position. The phenyl groups in the 5- and 6-positions are twisted at angles of 75.7 (1) and 36.5 (1)degrees, respectively, from the plane of the pyrone ring.
