Abstract
Mandate M/515 Phase 2 Project Team SC4.T5 “Development of rules covering shallow floor construction, and other flooring types using precast concrete elements” produced the attached background document. The scope of SC4.T5 was to establish rules, based on principles contained in EN1994 and EN1993, for the design of shallow floors and other beams using precast units. This specific guidance will greatly ease the use of EN1994, rather than individuals having to
compile rules from first principles – often with different results. In drafting the new work, care will be taken to be as clear as possible, to use simple routes throughout the document, and to avoid additional and/or empirical rules for particular structure or structural-element types, all to the extent that is reasonably practical. The background document comprises of three main parts:
Part I gives background information for the use of precast concrete elements for composite beams with a focus on rules for bolts as shear connector.
Part II deals with composite shallow floor construction in general. Some additional design rules are proposed, after verifying current EN 1994‐1‐1 for its applicability for composite shallow floor construction. Special attention was given to the use of transverse bars as shear connector.
Part III provides background information for the fire design of composite shallow floor beams and includes a report from R. Zanon, who developed a simplified method for the fire design of a typical type of shallow floor cross‐section.
The deliverables of SC4.T5 were approved by SC 4 and will now be used by Mandate M/515 Phase 3 and 4 Project Teams, specifically SC4.T6, SC4.T7 and SC4.T8.
