Abstract

Sharon L. Jansen's Dangerous Talk and Strange Behaviour. Women and
Popular Resistance to the Reforms of Henry VIII (Basingstoke: Macmillan,
1996; pp. 232. £26.50) surveys ground familiar to Tudor historians from G. R.
Elton's magisterial Policy and Police. The Enforcement of the Reformation
in the Age of Thomas Cromwell (Cambridge, 1972). The scope of her book,
however, is considerably more circumscribed; case-studies of four women
(Margaret Cheyne, Elizabeth Barton, Elizabeth Wood and Mabel Brigge),
who between 1534 and 1538 were executed for their opposition to Henry
VIII. [...]
