Abstract
The trend to incorporate digital capabilities into physical products enables connections that stretch across platforms. Such interconnectedness challenges existing theory on platforms. This study extends theory on platform innovation strategies using a comparative, inductive study of 94 home automation platforms. We identify four archetypical platform strategies (closed, orchestrator, connector, and complementor) that differ with regard to access for complementary products and the interfaces used. Choices of platform strategies can be explained by two pairs of tradeoffs concerning value creation and value appropriation, which are influenced by the entry conditions of platform providers and industry level changes. Longitudinal analysis shows that platforms increasingly combine different strategies. We find that what we call ‘multiplexing’, when platform providers draw on elements of other platforms, has become widespread in the home automation industry. This reduces the tendency towards convergence and winner-takes- all dynamics that were observed in other platform competition studies.
