Abstract

1,4,7-tris{2,2'-bipyridyl-5-yl-methyl-bis-(2,2'-bipyridine)ruthenium(II)}-1,4,7-triazacyclononane (L-1) is a highly charged and strongly luminescent pH and transition metal ion sensor with a first photo excited state pK(a) of 7.1, which undergoes a large luminescence decrease between pH 9 and 5, making it very sensitive for monitoring pH in the physiological pH range its luminescence is also strongly reduced upon coordination of some transition metal cations, at a characteristic rate measurable by stopped-flow fluorimetry. Stability constants for the complexes can also be determined from quenching studies.
