Abstract

Katharine Evans (c. 1618–1692) and Sarah Cheevers (c. 1608–1664) were prophets, missionaries, and writers affiliated with the Quaker movement. They are best-known for the trials and suffering they faced at the hands of the Roman Inquisition in Malta, where they were imprisoned between 1658 and 1662. During this time, they penned a semi-autobiographical account of their captivity, which contained epistles to their husbands and children, as well as to other members of their religious community. The account shows how the two women were able to hold firm to their Quaker faith, despite the extreme sufferings they endured.
