UNSPECIFIED (1998) Measurement of trapped residuals in an SI engine through skip-firing THE EURO IV CHALLENGE. In: 1st International Seminar on the Euro IV Challenge - Future Technologies and Systems, DEC 03-04, 1997, INST MECH ENGINEERS HEADQUARTERS, LONDON, ENGLAND.

Abstract

Direct measurement of residuals concentration can be extremely difficult as it involves sampling the in-cylinder gases. An alternative technique is presented in which sparks are missed while fuel and air supply is maintained. This purges the residuals and gives a full cylinder of combustible mixture. The increase in indicated work when the ignition is restored, compared to normal operation, gives a measure of the residuals concentration. Test results indicated that the residuals level increased at low manifold pressures and with high valve overlap periods, as expected. The technique was also found to be relatively unaffected by changes in air-fuel ratio and to give broad agreement with results from analysis of inlet and exhaust pressures. It is considered that the technique would be equally applicable to direct injection engines.
