Abstract
This article describes the use of an inclined face, sequential excavation and support method using sprayed concrete to provide ground support and minimize ground movements in tunnel lining applications. Since lattice girders and mesh reinforcement are not used with the described system, a real time survey and setting out instrument is required to control the excavation and spraying process. Information on the progress of the workface is relayed in graphic and numerical form to the operator and represents the difference between the current workface and the final tunnel shape as designed. The technology allows the user to control the system via local radio network, which means users are away from dangerous areas of the operation.
