Abstract

We study the magnetic interactions across spacer layers which are non-magnetic, metallic, binary solid solutions with concentration x. A theory for the exchange coupling across such disordered spacer layers based on a tight binding description of the electronic structure is developed and the asymptotic behavior of the coupling for large spacer thickness derived. The geometry of the Fermi surface obtained by KKR-CPA calculations is used to iind the evolution with x of the periods of the oscillatory exchange coupling across Cu(1-x)Ni-x spacers. The average of the mean-free path over the Fermi surfacer the residual resistivity as well as the exponential damping of the oscillation are also investigated. (C) 1998 Elsevier Science B.V.
