Abstract
The sensitivity of the human eye affects the quality of images perceived by it. This paper presents an approach to optimize the polarized image stimulus. We investigated the macular perception of polarized images with the help of a theoretically derived spatiotemporal function which maximizes the observer’s polarized image visibility. The spatiotemporal function combines a temporal mathematical flicker model with spatial frequency domain analysis and Stokes vector-derived polarized viewing patterns. This enables spatiotemporal function mapping of polarization sensitivity of the human eye. The proposed model was experimentally validated on a group of volunteers by performing polarization perception tests based on images created using the mathematical model. Thus, this study introduces a simple polarization-based self-diagnosis test using polarization perception in the human eye, which helps detect macular degeneration.
