Abstract
The article reviews past patterns of social work provision in the Czech Republic and developments following the ''Velvet Revolution'' of 1989. Social work's prospects in a pluralist policy context are considered in relation to: the reliance on informal care; the impact of divorce; the effects of economic policy; the difficulties in developing voluntary and commercial care provision; and the lack of clarity concerning the role of the state. Tentative conclusions are reached concerning the implications for social work.
