Abstract
The craft sector in the UK comprises of a disproportionate number of micro companies, some of which are made up of a solitary maker who is also the business owner. This chapter illustrates the identity journey that these individuals take from being a hobbyist to a creative entrepreneur, turning their interest and passion for a craft into their primary source of income. In illustrating changes in how they see themselves and their craft, we draw attention to their identity conflicts which mirror the core conflicts which exist between the creative and commercial worlds.
The chapter explores the identity work of a female craftsperson who navigates a series of career changes to harness her passion for knitting into starting her own craft business. This in-depth case study, which covers the start-up phase and first two years of a craft business, is compiled through life story interviews. The emotional ups and downs and practical lived experiences of a single maker as she journeys into entrepreneurship is presented as an illustrative path taken by many craft persons. The story also highlights the importance of specific events, networks and training in navigating identity conflicts. There is something in her story that will chime with anyone who has ventured into starting a business in the creative and cultural sector.
