Abstract
This chapter proposes that there are deeper unconscious processes at work which mean gender differences retain a legitimate if rather inscrutable influence. It looks at what the investment in either downplaying the significance of gender difference on the one hand, or advocating for it on the other, may be about. The notion of gender and gender difference in relation to bodily sex is more free-floating and less binary in its provenance, not least because it is clear how problematic the effort to maintain a fixed view of gender and gender difference can be. In loosely applying Jung’s model for archetypal manifestation, gender can operate in a polarised way where it operates in terms of complementarity or opposition to the gendered ‘other’ (i.e. female or male) or it can be ‘both’ (non-binary), or at any point on a continuum of expression of identity, desire and relational mutuality or conflict.
