Abstract

This chapter highlights how theatre and performance made with and by young people addresses violence in two East African countries – Rwanda and Uganda. It is argued that, in both countries, young people represent hope for more peaceful futures. However, creating performance about violence is complex: such sensitive issues require a careful and sensitive approach and, while performance can be considered to amplify the voices of young people for social change, critical reflections are offered regarding issues of ownership and agency.

To make these observations, the chapter offers excerpts from reflective dialogues between the authors. It privileges the knowledge and learning of Hope Azeda and Lillian Mbabazi, who have been involved in performance with young people for many years. We therefore focus on Hope’s experiences as a performance maker creating work with young people to engage with the 1994 Genocide Against the Tutsi in Rwanda and Lillian’s longstanding involvement with the Ugandan Schools Music, Dance and Drama Festivals, which have persistently included a focus on the prevention of violence.
