Abstract

This book chapter, engaging with the topic of disease and health, examines how current German-language literature has reacted to and processed the COVID-19 pandemic, both thematically and affectively in fictional ways. Rather than taking a comprehensive inventory of the literature produced in the context of the current pandemic, this study develops a literary-historical framework of the topos of epidemics and plagues, to which a selection of most recent textual examples is related. The study identifies some specific characteristics of the new ‘COVID literature’ while more generally asking what a literary engagement with the current as well as previous pandemics can teach us about literature and its specific relationship to the present.
