Abstract
The energy-based phase-field fracture modelling in the context of finite element method has been accepted as a superior approach compared to other numerical approaches in terms of its independency from the characteristics of the computational mesh and fracture propagation criteria. However, its performance can be challenged by the mesh restrictions due to the required size of the elements to capture the diffusive region over the domain based on the length-scale parameter, which is recognised as a numerical parameter in the phase-field community. Choosing a small length-scale parameter in relatively large domains results in a significant increase in the computational cost of the simulations. In this study, we apply Mohr’s failure criterion on the release of strain energy in the brittle solid to relate the length-scale parameter to measurable material properties such as the tensile strength and the fracture toughness. We use the fundamentals of linear elastic fracture mechanics (LEFM) to relate the numerical parameters and mesh properties to reliably model diffusive phase-field fractures. The recommended relationships are validated by simulating benchmark examples and comparing the numerical results to experimental data. The results of this study can be used in real-world engineering applications to increase the reliability and performance of the phase-field fracture modelling.
