Abstract

This article reports on a qualitative study exploring the role of initial teacher training courses in the careers of experienced non-native English speaking teachers (NNESTs). Analysis of 19 face-to-face and email interviews indicates that most respondents enrolled for two related reasons: to improve classroom practice and to improve career prospects. Findings indicate that courses have an impact on the classroom practices of many NNESTs towards more learner-centred teaching. However, impact on career prospects varied, with some respondents reporting ‘life-changing’ career moves and others reporting frustration at discrimination towards NNESTs when searching for work. Recommendations for course providers include more developmental approaches to lesson observation, more critical discussion of issues affecting NNESTs, and more L1-inclusive approaches to teaching practice.
