Abstract

Examined how candidate and interviewer locus of control (LoC) influence preferences for 3 categories of explanations preferred by candidates during graduate recruitment videos in 3 experiments. In Exp 1, 139 17-61 yr old undergraduates and 37 personnel managers rated internal-controllable, internal-uncontrollable, and external-uncontrollable attributions for hypothetical past events according to the likelihood of each producing a positive impression during a selection interview. Ss also completed Rotters Locus of Control questionnaire and the Interview Behavior Scale. Ss rated internal-controllable attributions most likely to create a positive impression. In Exp 2, 62 Ss completed the same questionnaires as in Exp 1. In Exp 3, 103 Ss completed the attribution questionnaire and the WLOC. Results show that all Ss rated internal-controllable candidate attributions for previous negative events as being more likely to convey a positive impression of a candidate. Personality appears to influence preference for candidate impression management strategy. Candidates who described themselves as more likely to use internal-controllable attributions received higher post-interview ratings.
