Abstract

In this study we aimed to (1) evaluate if parent-child differentiation andthe quality of parent-child relations (intergenerational support, satisfaction and conflict) varied with young adult's transitions towards greater independence from parents (residential independence and employment); and (2) compare parents' and children's perceptions of these variables, taking into account gender's moderating effect. The sample was composed by 115 Portuguese triads (mother, father and young adult child). Results indicated that parent-child relationships were little influenced by developmental transitions, and gender was important in the definition of these relationships. Moreover, parents had a more positive view of parent-child interactions than their children, but young adults' developmental transitions led to greater convergence of perspectives between generations.
