Abstract

This paper argues that offering entry into a prize draw as an incentive to those who participate in research studies contravenes the requirement to obtain informed consent. This principle is considered an essential ingredient of permissible recruitment to studies, notwithstanding exceptional cases (for example where the study can only be performed with participants who cannot consent). Researchers should provide greater justification for offering entry into a prize draw than for offering a straight payment, rather than the reverse, and this should be reflected in the processes of gaining ethical approval from Institutional Review Boards (IRBs) and Research Ethics Committees (RECs) (hereafter I will use IRB to encompass both) for the conduct of research.
