Abstract

Where a vertically corrugated web is used for a steel or composite plate girder, the maximum outstand of a compression flange is greater than for a plane web, The effect of this on local flange buckling, and the flexural behaviour of plate girders of this type, have been studied numerically and in laboratory tests, A criterion for classifying compressed ranges has been found, Depending on the shape of the corrugations, the slenderness should be based on the mean or the maximum outstand. The contribution of the web to flexural behaviour was found in the finite-element analyses to be small, and in the tests to be negligible.
