Abstract

This paper will describe part of the work carried out on the fabrication and properties of MoSi2 based composites for potential use in the gas industry. MoSi2 and MoSi2 based composites with 10 and 20vol% of SiC and Si3N4 reinforcement have been fabricated by pressureless sintering. This resulted in high density MoSi2 (similar to 97.6%T.D.) and 10vol% reinforcement added composites with densities >90%T.D. However, 20vol% addition composites had lower densities and this was reflected in their mechanical and thermal screening test performances. Room temperature flexure testing indicated that the MoSi, fabricated had a strength similar to that reported by other researchers and a comparable strength to commercial materials (Kanthal Super 1700 and Super 1800). The strength of the composites was lower reflecting the lower densities of these materials and this was particularly true of the 20vol% addition materials. Post mechanical evaluation of materials after thermal cycling and simulated combustion gas corrosion tests indicated no significant degradation in mechanical properties for the fabricated and Kanthal materials. Microstructural analysis of the thermally tested materials indicated the formation of a passive SiO2 surface layer.
