Abstract
Religious activities are inherently linguistic and religious organisations need to make decision about language use in their communal religious practice. This chapter will examine the basis of such decision-making in two key domains of religious practice: liturgy and proselytisation. In sacral orientations, language use is seen as a ritual act expressed in a sacred language, such as in Islam (Arabic) and traditional Catholicism (Latin). In comprehensibility orientations, language use is seen as an act of communication expressed in the language of worshippers and intended to be understood easily by the faith community. This later orientation was clearly expressed in the language policies of the Protestant reformation. In proselytising, comprehensibility orientations predominate as the aims is to communicate religious doctrine to potential converts. In such work, those working to spread their religion may choose to do so in the language of their audience. However, even in this case, language policies may be influenced by factors external to proselytising, including nationalistic and colonial agendas, which lead to the dissemination of religion through the teaching and learning of the language of the proselytiser rather than the audience.
