Abstract

We describe an algorithm which can be used to investigate whether a matrix group defined over a finite field decomposes with respect to a normal subgroup, defined as the normal closure of a given set of matrices. The possible decompositions correspond to classes in Aschbacher's classification of subgroups of the general linear group. (C) 1996 Academic Press, Inc.
