Abstract
Treatment of YCl3 . 6H(2)O with thionyl chloride in acetonitrile solution facilitated partial dehydration and provided colourless crystals of the yttrium(III)chloride molecular adduct [YCl3(H2O)(2)(MeCN)(2)]. Structural identification by X-ray crystallography revealed a 7 coordinate, pentagonal bipyramidal, metal geometry with two chlorine atoms in axial (trans) locations and the remaining chlorine atom and four solvate molecules in the equatorial plane. The Y-Cl bond distances are 2.673(6), 2.613(6) Angstrom (axial) and 2.587(6) Angstrom(equatorial) with trans Cl-Y-Cl 175.0(2)degrees. Copyright (C) 1996 Elsevier Science Ltd
