Abstract
Profiled steel sheeting for composite floor slabs for buildings is often attached to steel beams by through-deck welding. This enables the sheeting to contribute to the resistance of the slab to longitudinal shear, to an extent not allowed for in any design code. A theory for this contribution from the sheeting is developed, and is confirmed as a design method by comparisons with the results of seven tests on two composite beams with transverse sheeting and two with parallel sheeting. The circumstances are defined in which slab reinforcement transverse to the beam can be omitted.
