Abstract

The Law Society and Legal Aid Board have initiated a major training and accreditation scheme to improve the quality of custodial legal advice. The background to the scheme, in terms of research on the extent of use of non-solicitor advisers and the poor quality of custodial legal advice, is examined. The accreditation scheme and training package are analysed in terms of their likely impact on potential trainees, criminal defence solicitors and their firms, and law and practice in this field.
